Jo Secrest has been a determined champion for household hazardous waste disposal in San Marcos. She pushed and pushed, never letting up, even giving up new computer equipment in her department to find a way to fund the quarterly hazardous waste disposal events in San Marcos. This means that great quantities of chemicals do NOT find their way onto the ground and thus into our aquifer and streams in the area. For a long time, we had to make do with no hazardous waste disposal options, or infrequent ones, but Jo pushed to make them quarterly, worked to find funding, and she has also done a lot of manual labor that is involved in making this happen. She continues to find ways to make these more convenient, and happen more often. She is the point person for the public who helped implement single stream recycling and works enthusiastically at booths and educational events to tell people about recycling and hazardous waste. She has worked for many years, going above and beyond the call of duty to help San Marcos do the right thing with hazardous waste.
