Aquifer Protection in San Antonio

June 11, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Please join us for our next Community Meeting on Tuesday, June 11th, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the GVTC Auditorium, in the Smithson Valley area(36101 FM 5139, New Braunfels, TX 78132.)

Our speaker will be Mr. Grant Ellis, Natural Resources Manager for San Antonio’s Parks and Recreation Department, presenting a talk on “Saving the Edwards Aquifer:  San Antonio’s Edwards Aquifer Protection Program.”   The City of San Antonio’s Edwards Aquifer Protection Program was established to help protect the quality and quantity of water that recharges the Edwards Aquifer, the largest source of drinking water for San Antonio residents.  Toward this goal, the City collects a percentage of the local sales tax which is used to purchase land and conservation easements over the most sensitive sections of the aquifer.  Originally approved by voters in 2000, the 1/8th-cent sales tax has been renewed three times by San Antonio residents, in 2005, 2010 and 2015.  To date, the program has committed over $270 million and has protected over 156,000 acres of land.
