Wild Rice Survey

August 14, 2017 - August 18, 2017

Please email rachel@sanmarcosriver.orgto get a copy of the full email with all details about volunteering.  Need 10 to 15 volunteers per day, volunteer for one or several days.  Bank work as well as in the water. This annual survey is done to determine health of the endangered wild rice in the SM River, locations of stands, size of stands, etc.  Be a part of this great project that has gone on for decades, and has good data collected by all these professionals and volunteers.   They all understand that the health of the wild rice is important—it is the reason we still have flows of water in this river!  Without the endangered species there would never have been pumping limits on the aquifer, which in turn makes sure enough water is left to feed San Marcos and Comal springs even during drought.  And the whole basis of the pumping limits and other HCP activities like paying farmers to not plant a crop and irrigate during droughts, is based on the amount of water the rice needs to flow over it, in our river. So you see why everyone cares about it so much!
