You may have read a bit in the Daily Record about our big news: the Council voted unanimously to purchase the Millican Ranch with a very low interest loan from the Texas Water Development Board, which comes with a large grant or “forgiveness” for 45% of the loan. There were two votes this month at Council, one early in August, first on the sales contract, and then the final vote on the purchase just last Tuesday. The loan comes from a federal Clean Water Fund, and so the interest is 1.3%. The city has completed that purchase and in October the loan and grant will be “closed on” too.
SMRF is now embarking on a series of informative talks to any group in town that wishes to hear about this effort to conserve beautiful recharge zone land in key spots in a band of greenways above the springs, to help keep the river clear and flowing in the future as San Marcos grows. We will talk to the Kiwanis on Sept 6 at lunch at Grins. Last Tuesday evening we spoke to a large group of the nearest neighbors to this ranch, the Country Estates residents, at their community pool cookout. Thanks for these invitations, Kiwanis and neighbors! Let us know if any of you need a speaker at your club’s meetings.
