Land acquisition along the recharge zone in order to protect the Edwards Aquifer is a critical component of SMRF’s work. The aquifer provides drinking water to over 2 million people in Central Texas, and feeds Spring Lake which keeps our beautiful river and its endangered species alive and well. SMRF looks for properties to tie into a greenbelt loop in the recharge zone around the city- a project which SMRF, the City, and the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance (SMGA) have been working on for over 20 years. The city supports SMRF and SMGA connecting existing trails together to hopefully complete the trail loop around the west side of San Marcos. In the attachments to the agenda item for the council meeting, a map was included to show the council members a rough draft of potential trails options. See Our Plans
